Tucked along the Thames in Hammersmith, this much-loved restaurant remains as radiant and relevant today as when it first opened its doors in 1987. What began as a canteen for the Rogers’ husbands architectural practice evolved into an icon of London cuisine. Having never run a restaurant or even been professional chefs, Ruth Rogers and friend Rose Gray’s love of travel and Italian cooking was what catapulted The River Café to fame, creating a space defined by seasonality, vibrancy, and simplicity.

Inspired by Italian seasonal cooking, each dish celebrates freshness and flavour, letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Even the simplest tomato salad feels special, a testament to the kitchen’s sourcing and timing. The open kitchen allows you to watch chefs at work, with the iconic pink pizza oven taking centre stage. Handwritten menus, minimal table settings, and intuitively attentive staff enhance the experience while keeping the focus firmly on the food.

The River Café has also been a launchpad for some of Britain’s best-known chefs. Jamie Oliver learnt his craft in its kitchen, learning the art of simplicity and seasonality that would define his later career. Similarly, the café has nurtured talents such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Theo Randall, cementing its influence on a new generation of chefs.

Ruth Rogers sits at the heart of it all, guided by the belief that food brings people together and keeps us present, a philosophy that defines the restaurant. It is a sentiment she explores in her podcast, Ruthie’s Table 4, where she welcomes friends and artists to share their most memorable meals and their connection to food. Conversations have included everyone from Mark Ronson, Victoria Beckham, Michael Caine, Sienna Miller, Richard E. Grant, Ridley Scott, Maria Sharapova, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Ruth’s laid-back curiosity draws out the most intimate details, such as memories of family dinners, stories from meals at The River Café, and favourite dishes they cook when hosting. Listening feels like overhearing friends catching up over lunch at the next table.

When you sit down for lunch, the relaxed culture, thoughtful details, and top-tier people-watching combine with some of London’s finest food to make the experience unforgettable. For us, The River Café is a reminder that the best meals are always shared.
